Should you publish your prices on your website?

Yeah, I mean, this is definitely something I’m extremely passionate about. I could talk about our whole podcast, honestly. So, you know, I think for all of us who run businesses, you know, we’re just in such a unique position to call the shots, obviously. And, you know, we can take on as much work as we need or take on less if we want to. And I think within that, honestly, I would consider it a good burden that we all take a look at a way that we can use this flexibility that we have with both our schedules and our income, the kind of client work we take on our messaging and really like find a way that we can leave the world a better place. Because, you know, like when I was teaching high school, working for the public school system, I didn’t have that kind of flexibility.

Like, obviously I was teaching children. Obviously I was making a difference in that and I can, you know, give a portion of my income to something that I believe in. But I couldn’t, you know, stand in the classroom and be like, okay, I believe in like, you know, pets and, you know, really rescuing and giving back to animal shelters like I could have, but it wouldn’t have been like my brand, my messaging. It was still a teacher for the public school system. And so I think when we work for like corporations or we work for other people, we lose that like ability to kind of have that voice. So as a business owner, especially a creative business owner, I think we just really can take a look at where our values are and what aligns with like maybe our clientele and see how we can not only, you know, serve them and make like their lives great and wonderful, but leave the world itself a better place. So I’m a big proponent of using this platform we have as business owners to leave an impact in a way that’s aligned for us.

And as far as where to start, I mean, for me, it’s always going to come back to like my why, Why do I want to do this work? It’s incredibly fun, wonderful work, but it’s also incredibly hard. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears that we put into the daily grind, and it’s monotonous. And I think that there’s, you know, a reason why we get up and go about this every single day when a lot of times it would be easier to just go get a 9 to 5, have colleagues like have someone who sends us a steady paycheck. So why are you doing this? Why are you putting yourself through the the monotony, the tears, the blood, the hard work of like, you know, having clients find you and doing the work that you love. So for me, it strictly has come back to elevating the voices of women and girls. And I think that that’s something I’ve had to sit with for a long time. It’s a very, very personal cause for me.

And on hard days, like being honest this morning didn’t start out great. I just kind of had like a rough morning, a little bit of a low. I’m a little tired and, you know, kind of shaking that off, jumping in the shower and saying, okay, like, I’m going to get ready for this podcast. I’m going to sit down and, you know, do the work after this. And it’s because I know every single day that I’m coming to my desk or picking up my camera, it’s for a reason. And it’s to elevate the voices of women and girls, both my clients and our impact work with Val for girls, which I’m sure we’ll talk about down the line.

What is an ICA?

I get excited talking about this stuff. I mean, an ideal client, ICA is an ideal client avatar in a nutshell. And so when you think about that, it’s your dream client, right? Like, and it’s not just about price point. I think a lot of us get stuck on, Oh, well, you know, my ichha is going to book me at my price. True. Like, obviously. But what else? You know, are they going to just book you and then turn out to be nightmare clients because you guys are disconnected and not aligned in vision, personality, all of those things? Or is it a perfect fit? And when I say perfect fit, I like to think of it as a near perfect fit, meaning there’s still going to be some things that are like maybe like not 100%. Maybe it’s, you know, the location or maybe it’s the florals or maybe it’s, you know, their type of work. Maybe you’re like, oh, I, you know, work with doctors and lawyers.

But then what happens when you have someone in a marketing agency who, you know, is your ideal client? It’s sort of like buying a house like you search and search for the right house and then you find and fall in love with the right one. But it doesn’t have every single thing you want, but it’s close and it’s a good fit because it ends up being your home. And so when you’re thinking about your ideal client, you really I mean, it sounds crazy, but like you kind of get to dream up this person, right? Like a lot of people talk about putting a name to them and how they shop and all those kind of things, and that’s great. Like, absolutely. Name the ideal client, you know, give them a, you know, type of car that they drive in a career, but go deeper than that. Like what makes them tick? Who are they? What are they value? Why are they hiring you? What kind of wedding do they want? What kind of lifestyle do they want? And when you can go into those things, then you can tie it and connect it to your brand voice, because often there should be some kind of alignment between those things.

If you could add one final piece of advice, something that’s made a difference in your personal life or your business life, what would that piece of advice be?

So, you know, I think across the board with both brands, with both businesses, I would love to tell like my clients and on both sides to listen to your voice and to trust what you want. If it’s a certain way that you want your wedding day to be or feel, or if you want to elope or have an intimate wedding, do it. Like don’t let anyone else’s opinions stop you from having the wedding that you deserve. And for my copywriting clients, both male and female and non-binary, I think more than anything, I want you to be able to hear yourself and trust that your voice matters and there’s room for your voice in the world.
